Referrer tracking shows which platforms and websites are sending traffic to your link page. This tells you which channels are most effective for promoting your profile.
How referrers are tracked
When a visitor clicks a link to your page, their browser sends a "Referer" HTTP header identifying where they came from. We parse this to identify the platform or domain.
Common referrer labels
- instagram.com / Instagram app — clicks from your Instagram bio or stories.
- tiktok.com — clicks from your TikTok bio.
- twitter.com / t.co — clicks from Twitter/X.
- Direct / None — visitors who typed your URL directly or came from a source that strips referrers (common with WhatsApp and email).
- google.com — organic Google search traffic.
- l.instagram.com — Instagram's link redirect service.
Using referrer data
Compare your top referrers each month to understand which platforms drive the most value. If Instagram drives 5× more traffic than TikTok, that's where your content effort is paying off. Low referral from a platform where you post frequently suggests a disconnect between your content and your call to action.
